I can't run ANY Source game. If I go to the Play Games window and double click any Source game it apparently starts up (screen goes black) and then it just goes back to desktop as if nothing had happened.
This all started when I was playing some dod:s and I got a lot of random noise on my screen and it sometimes froze. Then it crashed with an error something to do with DX8.1.
After that I tried to go to the folder which containst DoD:S and open the exe there, but it gave my a fĂĽcking application error or some sort containing bullshĂ*t figures normally seen in memory errors (0Ă—000000000).
I've since reinstalled DoD:S but since I can't open any Source game it leads me to believe something a little more widespread is going on with my computer.
Believe it or not, but I actually couldn't open Windows Media Player yesterday, also due to an application error.
I would really really really really appreciate some help.
<EDIT> I'm trying this now. http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-...i=&p_topview=1
I'll let you guys now how it turns out.<EDIT>

K my computer just died. (I'm on a schoolcomputer atm)
Whenever I startup I get strange vertical lines across my screen (those lines stay), and when windows is loading the computer crashes and starts back up (talking about a vicious circle), I tried in safe mode but that doesn't work either.
I'm pretty sure the lines are not from my screen but rather send to it by my computer.
WTF is going on?!?! Is it windows or is it my videocard? (see my other threads for more info about recent problems.)
I'm lost... and another question: Is there any way to replace windows without deleting all the other files on my HD?

Sounds like your RAM, harddrive, or videocard. You said you were getting noise on the screen eh? Artifacts... yep that's probably your videocard. Pop open your case and turn on your computer... see if all your fans are still spinning... chances are your videocard is fried cause the GPU was too hot for too long. A random crash COULD cause a memory error... but it usually doesn't happen. The Windows Media Player thing was probably un-related.
I had a similar problem with the startup thing (it was a little different, anytime my card tried to load any type of driver for windows the display would corrupt)... I had to buy a new graphics card.
edit: If you're only getting these wierd lines when Windows is ready to load, you could try booting up in command prompt and then manually backing them up.
OR, you could boot off of your Windows CD, and just do an over-write install onto it. Your computer will work, but it'll be slow as hell. You basically do that so you can get in and backup your files before you re-format. I still think it may be a hardware issue... if I understood what you said correctly. Give it a shot though, it doesn't hurt.

If it was his video card heating up it would probably have crashed before it could have done major damage. Unless it go too hot too quick.

K I installed XP over the existing one and everything seems to be running fine...
I'm a bit nervous because I haven't installed any graphic drivers yet so my computer is basicly not using the videocard.
I installed the driver and it friggin crashed again in the same manner as before, well at least I got the files I wanted to my D:\. I'm formatting this biatch now.
I hope my videocard isn't ****ed, lets hope it's a software error. :nonono2:

I had the same problem when my card tried to load up the drivers... just with me it dind't matter if it was generic VGA drivers, or actual ATi catalyst drivers.
Just euh... re-format again and use your VGA drivers while I try to figure out a solution.
What you could try doing is flashing your graphic card's BIOS. It didn't work for me, but I suppose it's worth a shot. I eventually took my card to a guy I know (one of my dad's clients) and he said it was damaged. Put in a nice new 6600GT for me tho (had 2 buy the card, but it was examined and serviced free of charge).
I think in the end you're going to have to buy a new graphics card... call it an early Christmas present =P
I can't login @ TB yet.
The best thing for you to do would be to put your graphics card in a friend's computer or something, to see if it gives you the same problem.

Here's the update.
I'm planning to buy a Gainward 7800GT and a Aspire ATX-AS520W (PSU, 520W) but I haven't decided on a motherboard yet.
I'm open to suggestions, I have a Intel P4 (3.2Ghz w HT) socket 478, 2 sticks of 512mb or pc2700 :o DDR SDRAM memory (I dunno how many pins, how do I check?).
It has to be PCI-E ofcourse (7800) and compatible with my proc. and memory. I'm aiming for $/€90-ish. It doesn't have to be SLI, it does however have to support my PSU which is ATX if I'm not mistaken.
<edit> I haven't ordered the 7800 and PSU yet. So you can basicly scrap the last couple of lines. :biggthump Also when I can enter my pc I will run CPUz or a similar program to give you my full specs.

More ram. 2 gigs is becoming the standard.

I'll replace it with some dual channel goodness later on. I'm focusing on the mobo, GPU and PSU. How much Watt does a 7800 need anyway?
noobman
October 15th, 2005, 12:02 PM
Recommended wattage for the 7800GT is 350W, soi a 520 should be enough juice...
...now as for PCI-E mobo's that use socket 478 processors... there aren't many so you'll really have to look. I say if you find one, take it.
And yeah, since that system is built 2 last, you might want to go with 2gb of RAM somewhere down the road.

Get an ABIT AX8 motherboard. It's a socket 939. It'll last ya a while. Upgrade your processor since if you get this you'll be going AMD to an X2 4400. There is only 1 pci-e 16 slot for the mobo though, so if you plan on wasting your money and going SLI then dont get this. If not, then do get this motherboard. I've installed it on my computer, and anothers. Ours are doing us great.
Your 520 PSU will definitely power what you want so stick with that.
And for RAM, get pc3200 and 2 gigs of it. I recommend getting Corsair, Kingston, or OCZ brand.

Hint: If you're getting a 7800GT, I'd recommend getting the MSI one. Word is that it can be overclocked to BEAT the 7800GTX with the stock cooler, provided that you have an adequate case.

Yeah, that's why I asked basicly. :P Well I found one but I heard it wasen't top quality. Now I have a dillema. Replace my processors and buy a new one or buy a motherboard that might not be great and stick with that or buy an AGP card (6800Ultra would do the trick).
Here's the mobo I found. I don't know what to think.
