View Full Version : How Exactly do we Overclock?

Mine is a Intel Pentium 4 2 Ghz Processor, with 512 MB RAM, so I want to know how to overclock and how to avoid overheating problems.

I researched a bit on overclocking, and they have a very complicated process of tweaking with the motherboard and others, and I am afraid to do that in case I end up doing something stupid, since I am not experienced in this kind of thing.

Any way someone inexperienced can do it?

Well, everyone starts out inexperienced. And a lot of the effectiveness of overclock is based on your other hardware. E.g. Mobo(motherboard), ram, chipset, etc, etc.

If your ram is DDR400/PC3200, then you would have no problem with it. But the mobo is another question. Can you tell us your mobo?

Also, I noticed that you have a Northwood, and I also noticed you have a C1 stepping. I think you should look up "SNDS" or "Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome" as absurd as it sounds, it could save you from another uneccassary upgrade.

If you're knew to overclocking, I would recommend you stay away from overclocking anything other than your gfx card for now. GFX cards are the easiest to overclock, as well as the easiest to notice when you've overdone it and need to step down a bit.

Hey you'd have to start somewhere in CPU overclocking, might as well now.

Motherboard is Echo-GLA. Processor is 400 Intel Pentium(R) 4N Processor - PGA 478. Chipset is Intel 845 GL.

Not too far off from my setup. Unfortunately, generic brand RAM can really hold you back when overclocking. My CPU can handle going all the way to 3ghz from 2.53, but with PC2100 RAM I can only get it upto about 2.7hghz.

I would really recommend staying away from overclocking, but if you REALLY want to OC your CPU, I'd say just use the BIOS.

Most brand-name motherboards (MSI, Asus, ect) come with software that'll let you change the FSB while you're in Windows, so you don't have to re-start like a million times.

A Compaq would be hard to overclock. I am sorry to inform you that everything on your computer is a choke to your overclocking, except the new 256MB stick.

You should just consider getting a new system.

Also, try and find a clockgen software that matches Intel845GL, it would be the very least it could overclock.

Try MSI FuzzyLogic 4 =D

Please google the subject, there is a very good overclocking website that has all the info you will need, I forget the name or address, but do some research before poentially damaging any of your hardware.

Err... wouldn't that be only compatible with MSI boards?

Graphics cards are the easiest to overclock as long as you keep them cool

You'd think so, but it acutally worked on my dad's computer... and he's got an ECI mobo or sumtin like that.
