“Superman Returns: The Videogame” will see a release this summer for all current-gen platforms, as well as Xbox 360. Electronic Arts, Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, and DC Comics announced that the game’s release shall be scheduled around the release of the movie on June 30, directed by Brian Singer. The same studio that developed the “Madden NFL” series (EA-Tiburon) is developing the “Superman” title. “Superman Returns: The Videogame” will feature storylines both from the feature film and from the 60+ years of comic book content from DC Comics.

"We have assembled world class talent at EA Tiburon to deliver this blockbuster experience and we are thrilled to team up with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics and have the opportunity to demonstrate our creative and technological expertise in the action/adventure category," said Steven Chiang of EA Tiburon. "We are creating a game that allows players to experience a real sense of flying, and master Superman's unrivaled super hero powers in order to save Metropolis. Only Superman can meet challenges of this scale."

The announcement of an added Xbox 360 port of “Superman Returns” makes for an interesting tale. Why would EA take the extra expense to port the title to a next-gen system? If the title was developed for current-generation consoles, the advantage of a port to an exponentially more powerful system is unclear. The possibilities: gamers could just be looking at some improved graphics and richer textures, or (fingers-crossed) playing at a next-gen title that will make our toes curl with added gameplay. Look for “Superman Returns: The Videogame” in June, 2006.
