In Italy, to celebrate and announce the ten-year anniversary of the PlayStation, an ad promotion by Sony was run in various newspapers and magazines depicting a young male of about thirty years old wearing a crown of thorns. The thorns on the crown were shaped into various X’s, O’s, squares and triangles – a not too subtle reference to the control buttons found on the PlayStation.
The photo had a caption underneath which read, “Ten years of passion.” While the attempt at humor in connecting the blockbuster movie, “The Passion of Christ,” with the PlayStation was obvious, the ad stirred controversy and criticism for being in bad taste. Sony apologized and recalled the ad due to the negative reactions.
