American Football is indeed a direct descendant of Rugby and other similar ball sports played in the United Kingdom, but nowadays it is definitely a sport in its own right!

See, you people just don't get it. I told you not to come in here *****ing about how you think rugby is better than American football, but you proceed to make yourself look illiterate anyways. We have some big mother****ing guys in the NFL, and they hit alot harder than many of the guys in your rugby leagues do, whether you want to believe it or not. I want you to tell me that you could honestly take some of those hits without any form of padding whatsoever. American football is derived from rugby. All that is different is that it is more organized, and we have pads.
As far as I can see, *****ing about how you think rugby is better makes you look like a complete idiot. This goes for anyone.

I know a lot of people like to use the argument that football (American) players are pussies because they wear pads. That's simply not true. It's a matter of life and death. The year before the put severe restrictions (a long time ago) on the way you could tackle and so forth, there were 33 deaths in professional football. I don't know about you, but it's a good idea to protect this big investment athletes. In the case of rugby, yeah it's violent and there are no pads, but most of their players are not built nearly quite as well as most football players. I wish youtube still had the video up "Over the Middle". It was a great part of a documentary demonstrating what it was like having to catch a pass over the middle. Scary stuff.
And to comment on the video, anytime somebody is going full speed one direction and they get knocked backwards on a hit, they got jacked up. Anybody watch the Miami, New York game last monday night? Two players got drilled, two plays in a row.
Oh and anybody who says football has no flow, probably hasn't seen a properly orchestrated two-minute drill.'
Haha, I just found this, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpT1Q0DL1cA

Kester
December 28th, 2006, 02:29 PM
Wow, 2 minutes of flow. It's hardly 40 minutes though it is?
Oh and the reason it's violent is because they use their padding and helmets as weapons, nothing more. I'd love to see any of them attempt a tackle in rugby.
TheTaxidermist
December 28th, 2006, 02:49 PM
Wow, it's because they use pads... as weapons. I guess that makes sense. Trust me, a 250 pound lineback, could nail the crap out of a rugby player. And in football, at most points it's against the rules to tackle leading with the helmet. Especially on vulnerable players such as QB's and WR's. Most of the time, they lead with the shoulder. I've watched rugby and I'd say there's hardly any kind of flow.
Kaze
December 28th, 2006, 03:21 PM
Agreed with TheTaxidermist. Don't rugby players throw their teammates into the air to catch a ball or something? And you call that paced..

And Taxi, I very much doubt american footballers would last long playing rugby, with rugby rules. However I'm pretty certain it wouldn't be the same if it was reversed.

Let's not forget only 3 downs.
I think people are mistaking rugby players as small, because they don't appear as large without padding. My uncle played to the Canadian National team, but didn't hardly get to play because at 6 foot 5 and 268lbs, he wasn't big enough(some of it was because of his build though). Many of those fellows are 6foot 6 plus, and push 290lbs. and not too many big guts are in rugby....
american football does have cheerleaders for the guys though...

Kester, you fail to see the point. Both games are similar, but completely different in their own ways. I seriously doubt a rugby player could understand the workings of American football, and I'm sure a football player wouldn't understand rugby that well. You say I am commenting on a sport I know very little about .

December 28th, 2006, 07:02 PM
Aside from the hard hits, there's really layers of strategy underneath each play, and Kaze is right, it's simply very difficult to understand without watching it or playing it a great deal.
Much like I see rugby. When I watch a rugby match, I see a pile of guys tripping over each other and wrestling in the mud while trying to beat the crap out of a watermelon.
I don't say the game is inferior, but I will admit I don't understand what's going on.
Different games indeed, but I love my Football.
TheTaxidermist
December 28th, 2006, 10:31 PM
I love the strategy in football, and most of the time, that's what it comes down to. Sure there may be a very short break in between plays, but that's time to strategize. And frankly most say "football players have no stamina and they get tired so fast." What's more difficult to run, 100 yards or to run 10 yards as fast as you can, stop, run 10 yards as fast as you can, stop then run 10 yards as fast as you can, and so on.

December 29th, 2006, 03:00 AM
Don't forget, Tess, the CFL also has Ricky Williams!
As for rugby vs football, keep in mind that MOST of the players in the NFL are HUGE. If they weren't wearing pads, they'd kill most of the people out there. Both sports have their own good and negative aspects, though.
The video was entertaining, but a LOT of those were dirty hits. They may look awesome, but they screw over the team. My favorite football highlight videos are still the ones with good ol' Barry. Never see him get hit like that!

A rugby player would do better at AF than the other way round. Admittedly AF allows tackling players who haven't got the ball, but then you have padding and the rugby players are the same build as the AF players. The frequent breaks in play would help the rugby players no end as they're used to playing for 40 minutes at a time as opposed to 2 minutes then 2 minute or so break. The padding wouldn't cause much trouble, they just have to remember to get stuck in.
On the otherhand an AF team playing rugby would have to be prepared to charge around for 40 minutes at a time pretty much non stop. On top of that the speed of play is a lot faster than AF. Also the fact that AF has your offensive and deffensive groups (from what I can remember), rugby has 15 men and a few subs. They play all match, no off and on (unless you have a blood sub or full substitution.

I'd have to disagree that the speed of play in Rugby is a lot faster than american football. When college players go to the professionals, one of the biggest differences they notice is that professional football is a LOT faster than college football. In proffessional football, everything is happening so fast and you have to make perfect split-second decisions. Oh and on the comment of that video you posted, NFL players get hit like that all the time, but of course you have the padding so it doesn't seem like it's as hard. I think they did a study and found that hard football tackles were the equivelant of being in a car accident. Yeah, you have to be tough to play BOTH sports. The hitting can be the same in both sports. I got nothin against rugby because I know it's a tough hard-hitting sport, but don't act like rugby is any tougher than football because they are both really tough to play and to be good at. I personally like football better because of the strategy and of course, the only people that really player rugby around here are high schools and colleges.

But everyone knows what you're talking about when you say soccer, so the whole world acknowledges it as soccer, but a majority call it football. Therefore, if you wanted to be logical about it, it would be more sensical to just have people call it soccer, since it has 2 names (futbol/football and soccer), and American Football only has 1 (football).
