One of the key people behind the Tokyo Game Show is mulling a radical rethink of the annual computer games expo. This update would split the show into two events: one closer to Tokyo for the industry and one that travels across Japan for the consumers.

"We want to have a much smaller trade and press event in central Tokyo, so all the trade people and journalists can easily come," said Yoshihiro Maruyama [cq], chairman of the events committee of the Computer Entertainment Software Association (CESA), in an interview on the sidelines of this year's event.

This year's Tokyo Game Show ran for three days at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, about 30 minutes by train from Tokyo. Attendance on the first day, nominally for press and trade visitors, was around 36,000. Organizers were expecting about 110,000 visitors over the weekend.

The plan hasn't been officially proposed to board members of the CESA, the show's organizers, and is in response to the perceived fall in stature of the Tokyo Game Show versus competing events in other countries. Most notably its competitors include the E3 show in Los Angeles, which is now favored by Japanese software makers as a platform for their major announcements.

A proposal to the board of CESA is one of the next steps that needs to be taken for the plan to be realized. Maruyama feels that the first new-style Tokyo Game Show, should it be proposed and approved by CESA, could take place as early as 2007.

"Next year we cannot change the format in a big way, because we are already booking the convention center," he said. "For the following year, starting in 2007, we might be able to switch."
