View Full Version : Civil War in the United States?

It's already happened once, do you think it will happen again? I do, and here's my theory.
Possibly within the next 100 years or so, a civil war will break out between two or more factions within the United States. Here's a diagram to illustrate my thoughts.
Step 1: The economy begins to decline. The war in the Middle East isn't exactly 'helping' our economy, and I have a feeling it's going to get worse.
Step 2: Another 'Great Depression'. Economy collapses. This doesn't really need an explanation, does it?
Step 3: People are stressed, worried, and worst of all, angry.
Step 4: There is talk of a possible rebellion, and riots begin to break out in the larger cities all over the U.S.
Step 5: To protect themselves against the riots, people form 'political factions'. (I.E: political parties with more of a violent and defensive streak.)
Step 6: The military and/or government is fed up, and declares martial law.
Step 7: The people are outraged at this, and slowly, outbreaks of violence against the military manifest themselves all over the U.S.
Step 8: Civil War is declared, with each faction vying for control over the government.'
[Possible Factions]
1)The Government/Military
2)Previously wealthy business owners and tycoons
3)People who have been most affected by the Second Great Depression
4)Past major political parties: Republicans, Democrats, The Green Party, etc.
5)Single town/state/county factions.
Step 9: The chaos gives rivaling countries a chance to slip in and take the spoils, possibly taking over the government themselves.
Discuss.
[Possible Questions For Discussion]
Will other countries come to our aid, or come to take over?
How long will it take to happen?
Will it happen at all?
How long will the war last?

I think it will. We will wait and see.

wont happen in any of our lifetimes. The timeline for an event this extreme, for the country's persona and general attitude and morals to change that much, would take at least half a millennium.
One of the larger reasons I say this is because the way you describe it, you're predicting a non-military civil war, between the general public, most likely with state militias and private forces, and perhaps even mercenary armies hired out from third world countries.
But for this to happen, you'd have to get rid of all the peace loving hippies that live in the USA. There are more and more of these types of people with every generation. I don't think its a bad thing, but it's making warfare more and more unlikely. The only reason we went into the current wars were because of September 11th and our vengeful president George Bush jr.
It would take some very, very extreme changes. Even in another depression (which, according to history and our way of life, is a virtual guarantee to happen again and again), I don't think the country would be put into that much turmoil...
My final say is that...its possible...but highly unlikely. I might change my opinion on that depending on our next President. Hope we get someone infallible and..well..good, next time.

Wont happen at all. Would make for a good movie though :)I would agree. :smoke: I remember Barbed Wire with Pamela Anderson was based on Hollywood's scenario of a Second Civil War. But that was nothing much. Imagine at least 7 factions you mention above, it is recipe for a big mess. But yeah sooner or later big countries like the US must fall the way of the Romans.

I don't know, a scenario like this means get out of the area fast, or be prepared to be involved in a mess that involves rape, torture, loss of property, loss of relatives, loss of everything and a crap existence.

If this happens, the first thing I will do is head for the Adirondacks. The many mountains are perfect for spotting enemies from far away, and it is a generally secluded area, with lots of animals for hunting and plants for foraging. Rich soil and clean water too.

I have no mountains around here, so I'm stuck with having to go deep into the woods.

At first I was going to post that I disagree. The reason I was going to disagree is that, just because the roman empire collapsed, or any other empire collapsed, does not guarantee the same will happen to a country like the U.S. We are in completely different times. Our society is very, very different from any other. Communities are more self-dependent, people more individualistic, and smarter.
If the U.S. was even coming close to the point of civil unrest, we'd simply impeach our president, reform our government, and start anew. We have too many bright-minded individuals (geniuses in fact) who would come to the aid in troubled times.
Now that thats out of my system, I will say...its possible. Hundreds and hundreds of years from now (how long did the roman empire last? Approximately 677 years.) So, even if we did follow suit, it'll be when our grandchildren's grandchildren are grown up. And the roman empire fell apart because of its great expanse, lack of communication and control, and outside invaders and influences. The U.S. really doesn't need to worry about any of those.. So, we'll see. Well, we won't, but someone will.

I was thinking almost the same thing, except in a more violent way.
