I loved leisure suit larry in the land of the lounge lizzards back in it's original set up with text and keyboard only. I was also a big fan of wayne gretsky's NHL hockey on my old 88/86. crystal caves and secrete agent were fun. I loved tank wars as a great dos game (I made a qbasic version in high school).

That's about as many as I can think of right now.

Deadlock: Planetary Conquest. Really cool turn-based strategy game; I'm not sure when it's from, exactly, but it's pretty old.

Real Life, best graphics for an 500000000000+ old game ever. Gameplay can suck sometimes though. :P

jambo
November 30th, 2006, 09:01 PM
Nah Real Life sucks, especially when you try to run Wife 1.0 and Mistress 2.0 at the same time. It always crashes and burns

Is real-life truly old-school?
I thought something had to go out of style first. And real-life is still very much in fashion....otherwise we'd, you know, be dead.

MegaRace was just about the coolest game ever.

I used to love Legend of Scheherezade on the NES. I'm not a big fan of Final Fantasy style RPGs, but I loved that game for some reason.

My first gaming memories are of Frogger, so I'll put that one up there. Props also go out to Super Mario Bros 3 and Chrono Trigger. And Super Mario World. I could say more but I won't.
That's my type of bump!
As long as it sticks to the topic it's fine.

To this day, I still play massive amounts of Donkey Kong, usually on the NES. But I think my favorite game from the classic years is Timber, which was lucky for me in the arcade by my house, because no one else wanted to play it except me.

My favorite old school game and first RPG was Sword Of Vermilion for the Sega Genesis. I remember staying up for hours to level up my character.

Any of the Mega Man games. What's great about them is the fact they are pretty universal, sticking to the 2D style even in the next gen systems, so you can always enjoy the old school feeling.

Is DOOM old enough to be considered "Old School"?

Garcian Smith

Oh yes. I still recall playing co-op and deathmatch in secret, just in case my mates Dad found out we were using his PC =D

Harold_HTFC

Well I don't know if you would class it as old school but I always liked playing "Comic Zone" on the Megadrive. Or Zelda on the Snes.

Garcian Smith
January 2nd, 2008, 07:16 PM
Hahah! Comic Zone, I'd completely forgotten about that gem.

BahamutBBob
January 2nd, 2008, 11:09 PM
Anything in the 32 bit era (1999) and earlier counts as old school at this point if you ask me.

And I wish I'd gotten the chance to play Doom in deathmatch or coop, I tried once and it didn't work out too well :(

Retro is, at least for me, anything more than 5 years removed from modern relevance. This includes all consoles from the Atari 2600 to the Sega Dreamcast and all handhelds preceding the GBA, which is probably a year or so away from consideration.

The 3D consoles tend not to get the retro love they deserve because of this stupid idea that some old school gamers (nevermind that gaming isn't even that old) that the PlayStation soured everything up with its newfangled 3D graphics.

Here's a fun bit of retro:

Cannon Spike, a true gem on the Dreamcast.

One game that I spent countless hours on was a Genesis game called Zero Tolerance. It was sort of like Doom with strategy. Good stuff.

Liero is a kick-ass game, especially Liero Xtreme. It was basically a Worms clone that was in real-time, with the "Xtreme" version adding an easy-to-use interface, and powerful modding capability. If anyone would like, i'll host the files and a few mods/skins on here. Unfortunately, the game itself is by all accounts dead, and the online play as well as the community is completely gone.

I don't think so. It's not even working on MAME yet. You can get the DC game on eBay though.

Here's some more Arcade/Dreamcast classic gaming. Unlike Cannon Spike, however, Mars Matrix DOES work on MAME.

Anyway, let's continue this loving orgy for bullet hell shooters with some Gunbird.

Don't worry, the game is available in English on MAME. Honestly, though... Do you need to understand anything in a shoot-em-up? :D

I bought an arcade stick for my Dreamcast, so I have Mars Matrix (awesome, awesome game) and Bangai-O and Giga Wing 1 and 2 and Gunbird 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2... Capcom pretty much made the Dreamcast worth owning all by itself.

As for retro games I like, some of my earliest experiences were Moon Patrol and Bug Attack on the Apple IIe, so they remain important to me in that sense (and fun to play today). Super Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros. 3 remain some of my favorite games of all time, along with The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II on the NES. I feel dirty mentioning so many of my favorite games because they're from Nintendo and all fairly popular, but I can't help myself. They're great games!

Wild Arms; I know it's not really that old, so for the truly old school game I'd have to pick Wasteland.

A shooter that actually allows you the option to move backwards. Now there is something that was long overdue. Think the only other time I saw that was in a Macross NES game (when you turned into "robo" form).

Hey! For some reason I'm reminded of the original Contra, which was a good classic game...though difficult as heck, making me not want to take up the challenge of beating it. Think the farthest I've ever gotten was past the 3rd boss.

I think my favorite retro game from the earliest of my years has to be the first two Ninja Gaiden titles for NES. I like Ninja Gaiden II more than the first by a bit. First games ever to use cinematic cut-scenes. And they were really good, too;) Music was outstanding also.

http://http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=wmIbCNSsLqk&feature=related

Then, of course, you have the Super Mario ones, etc...

Oh, and the best video game intro ever award most definitely goes to this for me:) Another great musical accompaniment also.

Wild Arms - Darn my copy of the game for being scratched, and not even getting past any of the intros without freezing. :(
Ninja Gaiden - Could this possibly be the first ninja game? Or at least good one?
Crystalis - Classic intro...though I wish the controls could have been a little better. Having to pause the game to switch swords every other second is annoying. Thank the lord for L and R buttons.

Street fighter 2. If I had invested the money I dumped into those machines.......Of course Golden eye 007. Had a little game where I would shoot the bad guys in the most non-lethal places. But keep blasting them until they died. Extra credit for disarming them with a well placed shot, first.

I played the old PS1 game Spyro, mostly out of boredom, and have discovered it to be fun. Sure, it's simple, and is marketed to the gamer who isn't so hardcore, but it's a game. And a nicely made one. Albeit the ridiculous location of gems at times. ;)
