PS3’s GPU slightly less powerful than a 7800 GTX?
By: Jim Birmingham
At E3 it was said the Playstation 3’s powerful GPU would be better than that of two nVidia 6800’s running SLI.
With the launch of nVidia’s flagship next-gen card, the 7800 GTX, just a couple months ago, and the very recent launch of the 7800 GT, nVidia has been quite busy. Now, an interesting bit of news arose from the Official Playstation magazine. An nVidia spokesperson supposedly said “the PS3’s gpu will be slightly less powerful than that of the 7800 PC gpu”.
This means trouble for the PS3; if the PC already has technology matching that of a next-gen console it could affect the PS3’s launch greatly. Usually a console will launch with technology not currently available on the PC and will stay at the top of tech for at least a year, until of course the PC launches the next best thing and quickly strides forward to become the top dog again. While that is the normal thing to happen, it might not be truth this time.
No one has said much about the Xbox 360; using an ATI gpu, and no one knows as of right now if the gpu in the 360 will have the same turnout that is said for the PS3. Whatever the cause, it would appear Microsoft might be able to use this to their advantage and keep hush on technical specs of the gpu in their next-gen console.
