Well guys its time to start the rumor mill up again. We are told that the 360 will not be entirely backward compatible. The rumor is that it will only allow for top selling xbox titles to run on the 360. Now some developers tell us that its simply not going to happen at all. See the thing is that the first xbox used a different chip set and hardware from different companies than the xbox 360. This is just one of the many things to worry about when it comes to the specifics of the xbox 360.
We have confirmed information on the xbox 360 on our web site. Check it out!
Also read up on the current ps4 rumors.

To add on to the rumor with some confirmed information...
Microsoft added a security mechanism into the Xbox 360 that will be available exclusively to those who sign a deal with Microsoft. The Xbox will not run any software or hardware that is not verified as 'allowed'.
Part of that hardware includes 64mb memory cards for $40!

I've actually heard that the HDD will have the software that supports it, never heard about the mem cards. And as well as downloading new profiles from Xbox live to support more games in the future.
I have also read that some of Xbox's top-selling games well definatly work on the 360 (Halo, Halo 2) IMO, Xbox just wouldn't let the cashcrop Halo not work for the new xbox.

Well Microsoft has told the press that the more expensive xbox will have a hard disk and a few other goodies AND will be 100% backwars compatible. The cheaper will NOT.

I prolly won't even buy an Xbox 360, I barely use my Xbox as is. It's mine and my sister uses it more :P
But if I do get around to it, I will buy it a good deal after the PS3

I couldn't care less about backwards compatability. I really don't care at all. I don't really return to my old games, the only stuff I'd even think about hooking up again would be my N64 for some 'ol Mario Kart and Goldeneye

Amazing how much they are pushing the 'backwards compatibility' wagon yet most don't seem to care. I've seen may forums with polls on the subject and so many couldn't give a w00t........

Listen. If you could see my room you would notice the consoles lined up besides each other.....I own a xbox. Backward compatibility means nothing to me.

That's right, as do most xbox fans, so why the big need for backwards compatibility? It aint gonna make old games any better.....

Very true, I guess the people who would really want it, are the people that need to trade in their old console to help pay for the new one.

But if you don't own any xbox games, you won't need compatibility as you'll be buying xbox360 games anyway.........

True, but when i buy the 360 (no, never owned a xbox) i won't be buying Halo 2 cause i personally didn't see the hype. Compared to what you get on a 360 you'd probably be disappointed to play halo2 again.....

God they might as well call it the HaloBox... Anywho, some of their best sellers will be backwards compatible. That's what they said but why make it for a few games? That's bs and microsoft sucks.

The system is totally different from the Xbox, which is based on a single core Intel processor and an nVidia fixed function graphics system
the X360 uses a 3 core, IBM PowerPC chip and an ATi graphics solution that uses shaders.
It'll be very difficult to get Xbox games working on that thing at all... unless they use software-based emulation. It would be like using an emulator on your PC to play Xbox games... it would run very poorly without support from the game developers. Even then.... it'll be a tough job for them :wall: The X360 is powerful hardware so if they can bypass a lot of the rendering issues, savefile issues, and processing problems it can work.
Does anyone know if PS3 is supposed to be backwards compatible? That'll probably be just as big a challenge.
That's acutally how the PS2 works... a Playstation2 can't REALLY play Playstation games, but it emulates it. With multi-core processors and complex graphic solutions, that becomes very difficult.

Yeah Sony confirmed it at E3 that there is backwards compatability for both PS2 and PS1 games.
"PSOne runs on the PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware. PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software, and the format will continue forever," Kutaragi reportedly told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

I found out that the Xbox360 will be backwards compatible for ALL games, not just top sellers. Microsoft doesn't want to kill themselves, and I don't blame them. I may actually go buy it now.
