View Full Version : Errors in the New Site

This Thread is devoted to fixing bugs in the new site.
1. You have got to capitalize titles and the names of the systems. Otherwise it looks sloppy.
2. If an image is not available, don't have the (Image not available) picture filling in the space. It really is an eyesore.
3. You should get some more writers. Or maybe some proof readers. Many of the posts aren't that serious sounding, with authors notes splattered throughout the writing. It can be a bit distracting. Just saying.
~Jabode
P.S Great work on the newsite, I love it.

P.S Great work on the newsite, I love it.
1. It doesn't look sloppy if it's used throughout the entire site, as a recurring theme.
2. Trust me, the "image coming soon" text looks much better than a blank spot, or a little red x, ;)
3. If you find a language mistake in the site, just point it out, and it will be fixed. The editors at GN try their best to spot as much as they can, but even the best editor accidently let's one or two sneak by every so often.

What I mean with number three is that the site is very loose. If you want that, its fine. I am just pointing out that the stories on the sight are not written very seriously. If that is what you want, a very funny, but not very professional site, OK. If you want to be taken more seriously, you got to be more profesional with your writting.

We're in a transition stage at the moment. In terms of writing, we're all doing a little bit of everything to see where we're strong and where we're not. As far as "not being serious", I beg to differ. We're trying to add some personality to the articles, while still delivering the latest news. The key is to strike a balance between substance and style. This is really our first month under the new system of game-specific, stylized writing rather than purely factual, industry-wide news items, and as a result we're all still trying to find that sweet spot, where we can deliver the news in a creative fashion while maintaining consistency, and making sure that out writing style doesn't overpower the article.
In the end, all of us here at GamerNode work for our viewers. If our members want more focused articles, then that's what they'll get. As a network driven by the end-user's needs and wants, we're more than happy to take into consideration any suggestions that our members may have. I'll make sure to bring up the issue at our next staff meeting. Thanks for your input.
On a side note, I found another bug in the site. I really don't know how to describe it, so here's a screenshot:

Can you tell me what exactly you were doing when you got this error? We don't have a way to just view all the reviews yet. If you click on a particular one then you should have no trouble viewing it. If there is a problem please post the specifics of it here so that it can be addressed.
Thanks,

Site updates will be coming regularly so keep your eyes peeled for them. As for the forums issue. We will be addressing those as well as souping up the existing theme to make it look a lot nicer.
Thanks everyone for pointing this out and while I don't actually want you to do it, keep finding those problems and pass them our way.
Cheers,

i don't think the "new posts" link of the forum is working correctly... every time i click on it, it says that there are no new posts and then has the link for the posts of the last 24 hours but every time i have been on the site there really have been new posts (every time i use the posts of the past 24 hours link there's more there...)

We are aware of this issue and are working on it. For some reason, after making a post in a forum (like this post), it showed up to me as a new post, and appeared under 'New Forum Posts'. It seems random, and we're trying to find the root cause of it.
Please bear with us, and just look at post dates, thread titles, and latest poster to try and figure out if you've seen the thread yet.
Thanks!

It seems that GN 2.0 is loading really, really slow because of the intensive graphics on the page. It really bogs down especially when you try clicking through the news pages. I know you guys are probably working on this right now, but I thought it might be a good idea to mention it anyway. I'm only running dial-up but most people who log onto GN probably have that too.
The slow load times may discourage new people from visiting or give them a bad first impression.
But inspite of this, the site looks awesome. Never seen anything like it before.

That has a lot to do with the top story image. We're currently working on that. I must mention though that if you were to many of the other game sites around the web....you'd get extremely slow loading times on a dial up. As I said. We're working on it ;)

my experiences with DSL have been pretty bad... especially for online gaming... specifically i've seen incredible download speeds for dsl but the upload was pretty crappy... cable on the other hand isn't quite as fast as dsl (though i don't think its that far behind...) and the upload is a helluva lot better...
i've had 3 people running their own xbox over live on the cheapest cable service in my area (i think they tout it at 1.5 meg service...) and it ran just fine... but at my friends house (he has dsl) it had trouble running one xbox over live...

DSL (almost always) has better upload speeds and worse download speeds then Cable. Cable internet providers always limit the upload (mine is limited to 50k up, but I have 4meg down with comcast cable). My friends with dsl can download at like 1.5 meg but uplaod at 200k.

not sure if the indent text modification buttons work for the forums. I tried to use them for the "kill bill vol. 1 and 2" thread for the part i quoted (i just copied all the text over to notepad and then pasted it all in the message box of a new thread, then i tried to indent joe's quote but it was never indented...).

Got a suggestion. (But you guys are probably working on this one).
When anybody clicks on a news link, the user is brought to the main story. To the left, is the "Image Gallery". If there are no pictures, it just says, "Image Not Available."
Can we replace that message with something else? The reason why is that it looks like the page is broken or something. Maybe the squares can just be replaced with a gamernode logo "{GN") without any text. If text is really needed, maybe, just "News" is enough.
Thanks

it works as long as any new posts are entered while you are already looking at the forums (so... say i go to GN homepage and navigate to the forums... i click the new posts link and it doesn't work... then while viewing the forums for the next 5 minutes 2 other people post stuff and i reply to a thread as well... then click on the new posts and the 3 posts/threads will show up... but other than that... it doesn't work...)
i also cannot log out and i am using whatever number the latest IE is... i have no knowledge of the stuff involved but if the system still believes you are logged in while you really aren't, wouldn't that be something that could cause the new posts link to not work?

There was no problem, one you were viewing the page at a very low resolution so thats why the forums button was over on the left, and the page didn't fully load so the mouseover was messed up. So I guess problem fixed?

~Ownage
umm... alright... not sure about this but i think the original "problem" is that the word "forum" is in black and the first layer that is loaded onto the page is also black. So the problem exists that if one has a slow download, but wants to get to a certain page quickly without having to wait until everything loads they may not be able to see 'right away' where they are trying to go. So basically what happens is that for a time there is a link that is there but still cannot be seen. As for mouseover stuff you still have to guess as to where the link is in the first place then wait for the mouseover popup to... uh... pop up...
For the most part i don't really see this happening to me unless i'm doing some extensive downloading of my own, but i have seen it as well, its just that i can remember exactly where the link is and most people can do the same but for those newcomers out there that are stuck with 14.4 dialup and/or downloading 30 torrents at any given time... well... that, thats a different story...

i realize this isn't much of a "problem" with the "archive" pages but... i was wondering if there was a way to display what game you were searching under so that if nothing comes up you still know where you were (or if perchance someone clicks on the next/previous/first/last links on accident they know where they are...), maybe some sort of an actual label to show if it was a news item or a review (maybe a colorcoded GN symbol or something) or a preview or something. Other than that, would it be possible to somehow be able to use the 'back' button instead of getting a "warning: page has expired" thinger.
I realize you guys are working your butts off and its much appreciated, just thought i'd throw that out there and see what you guys thought...
