I bought a 30 gb video iPod shortly after they came out. I have been very happy with mine so far. I am big into listening to tech podcasts, so whenever I drive the 5 hours back home, I hook up the iPod to the car and listen to TWiT, Security Now, or even the Harvard CS podcasts. I am loving it, and I really have no complaints beyond the battery life. I havent gotten close to their reported 10+ hours of music playback. But thats the only complaint I have.

Can the video contain DVD videos or just music videos?

You can convert the dvd's into iPod video format, either .mov or mpeg 4. I havent tried it out, but there are tutorials online.

It would be funny if somebody put the Xvid on that.

I got one and battery life is my major complaint though I am told I have to let it charge overnight and take off the backlight to get that to improve. The back gets dirty from your fingers since it's metal and the wheel thing to navigate the iPod is cumbersome. I also use it for my podcasting and the stupid thing with iTunes won't put the podcasts in the podcast folder since I am on dial up and download my podcasts seperately over bit torrent and not with iTunes. Also the lack of playing many video formats is kinda lame, but overall, it's a good player.

Well, not playing other video formats makes business sense for Apple. They support the formats that play with their video players (Quicktime). And you can convert wma or xvid files into .mov or mpeg 4's. Kinda of a hassle, but its not bad.
Oh, and I too have found that the backlight really drains the battery pretty quick.

I've just read (maximum pc)they made a 30gig iPod video about the size of a nano on the markets for $300 dollars. If they can make it that small couldn't they just leave the old ones on the market for a lot, lot, less?

I heard the Nano production is only 99$ so they do put it on for alot more.

iPod 20gb here. I love it, and highly recommend it.
If you're going to get one though, make sure to get some sort of protective skin from TheiStore (http://www.theistore.com).

The iPod mini isn't a color screen though, right? I thought they could only play music.

There's also a hack to install an alternate OS on the iPod, one which lets you play Quake 1, =)

If you're looking for a portable media/storage device it's acutally pretty good, but for a pure MP3 player it's not the best... sound quality is meh. I'd have to say that you want to go for a Creative or Rio MP3 player.

They may be ripping you off, but it is still worth it. It is so great to have music, and now videos, with you where ever you go. I to wish that it was cheaper but alas, no.
In unrealated matters, a PSP can do the exact same things and more, yet it cost the same. Odd that the Ipod is still more popular.

It actually lets you play Doom 1. It's called iDoom, I have it on my mini. Hard to tell whats a wall and whats a monster with greyscale though...
