This is going to be a good battle... we've got two highly anticipated first person shooters coming out literally one day apart from each other.
Both focus on a strong single player campaign with deathmatch mutliplayer
Both have cutting edge graphic engines and some sleek leve design
F.E.A.R. treads new ground in terms of gameplay, whereas Quake 4 sticks with what works, and does it well.
On the other hand.... Quake 4 has a recognizable name, but then has to live upto Quake 2 and 3 in ADDITION to it's own hype.
Note that the FEAR SP demo was one of the most downloaded demos in gamimg history.
It'll be interesting to see how they do in sales, especially considering that F.E.A.R. has been reportedly leaked just 4 days prior to it's release.
My question is this: If you could only buy one of these games, which would it be?
edit: I went with F.E.A.R... I love the game. I like Quake, but I've never been a huge fan, and it looks like it'll be a performance hog with the way they've used the Doom3 engine.

Quake 4 is not like Doom 3. I'll clear that up for you right now.

The demo was perfect from a marketing standpoint... it previewed the game and totally teased you... it gave you a firefight, built upto a climax in the story for that specific mission, and then just totally ripped it away from you as the screen went blank.

FEAR fails to scare me so I think I'll check out Q4 when I get my computer in order.

It can be quite scary if your watching true ghost stories on tv from 10pm-midnight then go play it with the lights off alone. I know, i experiened it the other day :P

Quake 4 will be brilliant. It's gory, atmospheric and now you have a squad. What more do you want?
Stroggs? Yes!

Quake 4 hands down. F.E.A.R.'s single player was decent...but not worth my money. Had a blast with doom3 and fear just takes the same scare tactics and uses them. Fear's multiplayer was fun....for 15 minutes.
The real battle IMO will be COD 2 vs Quake 4 for sales. As for Cod 2 vs Quake 4 to gamers? I think most gamers with any cash will get both since they are two different genres and different worlds :P

The multiplayer is great for F.E.A.R. However with no anti-cheat software planned for the game, there's no reason for me to waste my money on a copy.

You'd be wasting your money if you wanted to play FEAR just for MP anyways. It is a terrible game MP wise. Extremely slow paced, and on top of that, just boring.
Singleplayer is fantastic however! Great, great stuff right there. Managed to give me a few creeps too.

I'm guessing you're a CS fan. or UT. The MP is fantastic. Its also pretty fast paced. I can tell you're not a fan of Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon PC games, which are slightly slower paced (movement speed wise) then FEAR.
In FEAR MP, there are a variety of weapons, including grenades, rocket launchers, spike shooters, proximity mines, and some crazy shotgun/chest imploder gun that rocks my socks off. It basically obliterates anything it gets a direct hit on and feels likea shotgun.
The movement speed is perfect for this type of gameplay. Its a bit on the arcadey side, but not as arcadey as CS or UT-based games. There is jumping, but they do a good job of ruining any chance you have of hitting your target while jumping, which is a good thing (eliminates bunny hoppin noobs).
And the gameplay is fast-paced in general. I will detail last nights foray into the MP. I entered a large room with about 3 people from my team fighting 5 people from the opposite team. Large shockwaves rocked the room as everyone was lobbing grenades, people were stuck to the wall, riddled with spikes from the spike gun (i forget the name, its like HSV gun or something), and others were just running with guns blazing trying to avoid the barrage of firepower being aimed at him. I watched one enemy run up to me as I reloaded, jump into the air and drop kick me in the face (literally), getting a "Headshot!" yell from him as I fell to the ground dead, and watched in slow motion as my teammate tossed a grenade which hit the enemy who had just downed me, exploding on impact (they do that, and I love it), blowing his butt to smithereens.
Its not slow-paced at all.

From what I've played, 15 mins of the MP demo and about an hour of the real games MP I've found it boring.
I do play UT, Quake, and CS games. However for quite some time I also played Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six games in multiplayer. This game just failed to impress me in the multiplayer area. What you've described above sounds like great fun, and quite fast. It is just too bad this cant be what the game always plays like.

Gonna have to disagree with you there. The multiplayer isn't BAD, but it's really nothing spectacular. One of those games that's worth a run online now and then, but it's not likely to become your #1 multiplayer game, like a BattleField 2 or a CS Source, or Unreal Tourney.
I'm a fan of Rainbow Six and I can tell you now, F.E.A.R's multiplayer is far closer to the pace of Counterstrike than it is to the pace of a Tom Clancy game. F.E.A.R's maps are all pretty dark, which is probably why everything seems slower (people are walking with caution so they don't get upended). Weapon accuracy has more of a Call of Duty style of feel. They're OK, not great, and it's pretty much impossible to hit someone if you're off the ground.
Firefights can be pretty intense, but they're hard to come by. Most people end up hiding. And I never could figure out how to drop-kick anyone =S

I think that Quake 4 will have the upper hand on the mp side of things, and maybe sp too.

I will have to agree, that Quake 4 will be better, so far from what i have seen it offers us more squad based play. Now FEAR could have been game of the year, IF, they added in CO-OP squad play, so it would be you and your buddies patroling around. Squad based Horror FPS, mmm, now theres a good game.

I dunno, I entered a team death match server last night and I didn't go 10 seconds without being in a firefight. I really tried to take an unbiased approach and watched how the game played. Nobody hid, everybody was running, and our team even had natural squads running around. When one of our squads met the enemy in a big room, all hell broke loose. Explosions, gunfire, tracer rounds sparking EVERYWHERE (people love that assault rifle), etc etc. Then some guy comes to the window above with the rocket launcher, sends three of them right into the core of our group and bam, skulls (death indicators) everywhere.
There are three melee moves.
Standing, you hit with the butt of your rifle (right-click by default).
Crouching AND moving forward = Slide tackle (C+W + Right click)
Jumping and moving forward = Drop kick (spacebar + w + right click)
The slide tackle is pretty useful because you really drop down to the floor quickly, usually slipping out of the enemies fire.
With everyone running around like that, it felt a bit more arcadey then the clancy games, but not as arcadey as CSS. I still say the MP is fantastic, but without anti-cheat, its useless. There's reportedly already a successful wallhack out for it.

Lone and I got into an argument about this yesterday and I thought I would bring to the fourms. Which is better Quake 4 or F.E.A.R.?
I say F.E.A.R. because of the better graphics, **** yourself levels and the down right incrediable AI. Not to mention there is something very satisfying about nailing someones head to a wall in mid air. Also it has great mulitplayer where Quake 4 has.. virtually none.

FEAR gets my vote for all those reasons too. Quake 4 rocks yes, but i will play FEAR a lot more than Quake 4......
Q4's single play is very boring and repetitive too me thinks.....JMO

Are you SERIOUS? Dude, being a gaming player for over ten years now (as an adult and when LAN party's meant stressfully matching impedance of coax cables!) I've played lots of games.
Quake 4 MP is good yes, though the single player is boring and repetitive, not to mention it seems to make people sick!
F.E.A.R single player is topping the best game i've ever played at the moment with it's carefully balanced sounds, lighting and AI. It has a storyline too.....:) Multiplayer is very much like HL2 Deathmatch but with greater detail and physics. Slow paced? HELL NO! Who you playing with bro? :)
I loved Quake 3, but Quake 4 doesn't cut the mustard for me. Pretty game yes, greatest game ever? No way.
Just my opinion.....:)

Yeah, FEAR managed to have great SP. And, far better SP than what Quake has to offer, as yes, the SP in Quake is darn repetitive.
FEAR and its multiplayer just didn't seem to entice me. I mean, it has a lot to offer, I just didnt find it good enough to win me over Quake's mp. Quake for MP, FEAR for SP. Even though FEAR did have a crappy storyline..eh, the SP was way better, still.
Although, if you'd been to one level in that game, it'd seem like you'd played them all, it did manage to be much better than the repetitive Quake sp.

Yeah, bit too far-fetched though, wherea's F.E.A.R has a more realistic F.E.E.L to it!
Quake4 great for arcade junkies, F.E.A.R great for realistic game junkies :D
